The female reproductive system is highly resilient and capable of handling the intense pressures of childbirth. It is also vulnerable to a wide range of diseases and disorders. A healthy reproductive system is essential not only for successful pregnancies, but for overall health and wellness.

Lack of access to proper gynecological healthcare services and doctors can rob women of a chance to have safe pregnancies and productive, pain-free lives. VNA Health Care’s gynecology professionals aim to plug this critical gap for female patients in suburban Chicago communities and surrounding counties.

The Importance of Breast Exams

Breast exams typically include a physical inspection of a woman’s breasts by a Nurse Practitioner or OB-GYN or Family Practice physician. The aim here is to look for any suspicious lumps or abnormalities which are often early signs of breast cancer.

For women from certain age groups and risk categories, breast exams may be accompanied by breast x-rays, commonly called mammograms. Regular physical exams and mammograms are essential in the fight against breast cancer.

For the average American woman, the chances of getting breast cancer are 1 in 8. With close to 43,000 deaths each year, it is a major cause of death among women in the United States. Early detection can significantly improve chances of recovery from cancer.

Breast exams and mammograms are proven ways for early screening of breast cancer. With timely detection and the latest treatment options, the odds of survival may reach 98%.

Realizing the importance of mammograms, government-funded projects like the CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) provide access to free/low-cost mammograms for women from low-income backgrounds.

VNA Health Care is a leading agency accredited to the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP), the state-level extension of the NBCCEDP. We provide compassionate and timely care for patients through dedicated gynecology specialists at our facilities.

Patients from DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Will, and Kankakee counties can have access to free onsite mammograms at the VNA Health Care Highland Avenue Aurora Health Center (subject to eligibility requirements).

The Importance of Pap Tests and STD Tests

Pap Tests

Pap tests have just one function – early detection of cervical cancers. Without a screening test, it is very difficult to detect cervical cancers in time. The symptoms often appear in the later stages of the disease and include unusual vaginal bleeding or discharges and pain during sexual intercourse.

Without early screening, cervical cancer patients have low odds of survival – below 50%. With pap smears, this number can be brought above 90%. OB-GYNs generally recommend pap tests once every three years for patients between the ages of 21 to 65.

A pap test is usually conducted alongside an annual wellness visit, during a pelvic exam. The healthcare provider collects tissue samples from inside your cervix and gets them tested at the lab for cancer cells.

Most health insurance plans cover screening measures like pap smear tests. If you have no insurance, you may still be eligible for no-cost pap smears under programs like the IBCCP.

The importance of pap smears cannot be overstated. Before their arrival, cervical cancer was a very frequent type of cancer among women, with a high death rate. Pap smear tests have reduced it to a relatively uncommon disease with higher survival rates.
