When Was the Last Time You Visited an Eye Doctor?

Most people visit their primary care providers and dentists regularly, but many are not aware of the need for an annual eye exam with their optometrist. Eye-health issues may show no symptoms so it is important to visit an expert.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a comprehensive dilated eye exam by an optometrist, often called an eye doctor, is necessary to find eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy in the early stages when treatment to prevent vision loss is most effective. If left untreated, the diseases may lead to permanent vision impairment or blindness.

During the exam, visual acuity (sharpness), depth perception, eye alignment, and eye movement are tested. Eye drops are used to make your pupils larger so your eye doctor can see inside your eyes and check for signs of health problems. Your eye doctor may even spot other conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, sometimes before your primary care doctor does as these symptoms can show up in our eyes first.

The CDC states that of the estimated 93 million US adults at high risk for vision loss, only half visited an eye doctor in the past 12 months.

Make sure that this year is the year where YOU schedule an annual check-up with an eye doctor to prevent any eye health issues from adversely impacting your quality of life!

Do you need glasses?

During your exam, the doctor also will determine if you need glasses if you don’t already wear them. We offer affordable glasses and a wide selection of frames in our optical shop.

You may qualify for a free exam and a free pair of glasses through a grant program generously supported by Lions Club District 1J.

These groups include African Americans 40 years and older, all adults older than 60 years including Mexican Americans, and people with a family history of glaucoma.
